Mmmm, mmm, mmmmm. Start with bass, drums, guitar, keyboards (mostly organ), a couple of saxes, and a vocalist who sounds something like a young Lou Rawls. Throw in some big fistfuls of funk, stir in some second-line slipsliding rhythmic razzmatazz, add a whole bottle of XXX Atomic WhupAss (don't make me open dis)., mix the whole mess in HDCD, and BAM.--you've got some mighty fine soundin' Crazyhorse Mongoose, a tasty Creole confection that your ears are going to eat up in a big hurry, I guar-an-tee it.
There is some clipping and distortion and dynamic range compression, but it is not catastrophic, merely annoying. Another note about mastering. This one is on the verge of being too loud.
I have been playing it alot since it arrived along with stanton moore and ulu. and this is a good fresh take on this style. This band got me heading in those directions and I'm really enjoying it. This is good stuff. I love funk, jazz funk, etc.
Also QUIET PLEASE is 10 minutes of great jamming. I was not disappointed.HAMPS HUMP is a great cover, different from the orginal but with a modern sound. I have heard many live versions of this song (as well as seen it performed a few times) and this CD version is the best. All in all a quality buy if you like Booker T/Meters type music. This was the first album I bought of Galactic. I read an article about them in Bass Player Magazine, and they listed the Meters as one of their influences.
Very nice with some great chunky grooves. If you have every visited the city and loved it, do yourself a favor and pick up a Galactic cd.
I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this group and especially this cd, "Crazyhorse Mongoose". If you have ever heard the "Preservation Hall Band" or just enjoyed a sax player on the street corner, you will be immediately whisked back to the feel and sound of New Orleans.
I've only gotten into Galactic recently, but I have absolutely loved everything that I have heard. The sound of Galactic embodies everything that is New Orleans.
From "Love on the Run" to "Quiet Please" this cd absolutely rocks, I hope one day I have the privledge of seeing this group live in concert. The deep sounds of the saxaphone, the groove of the music, and the occasional raspy vocals make this a very enjoyable listen.
This is not "lite jazz" so if you are looking for that, you probably need to go somewhere else.
